What is skimming and how is it different from a full plaster?
Skimming is a thin finishing coat, usually 2 to 3mm, applied over plasterboard or sound existing plaster to give a smooth, level surface ready for decorating. A full two-coat plaster is used when the base wall is bare brick or blockwork; skimming assumes there is already a stable surface underneath.
Why choose skimming over a full replaster?
If your walls or ceiling are structurally sound but tired, marked, or covered in old textured coatings, skimming gives you a like-new, smooth finish much faster and more cost-effectively than stripping back and starting from scratch with a full plaster.
Can you skim over wallpaper or artex?
Wallpaper should be removed first, as skim will not bond reliably over it long term. Sound artex can often be skimmed directly, giving it a flat, modern finish without the mess and dust of stripping it off, though we will check the condition first.
How long does a skim coat take to dry before I can paint?
A skim coat is typically touch dry within 24 to 48 hours in a normally ventilated room, though we always recommend leaving it fully dry and applying a diluted mist coat before the final paint colour goes on.
Do you skim new plasterboard on extensions and new-build rooms?
Yes, skimming fresh plasterboard is one of the most common jobs we do, giving new-build rooms and extensions their final smooth internal finish ready for decoration.
Is skimming a quick job compared to other plastering work?
Generally yes. Because skimming is a single thin coat over an existing sound surface rather than building up a full plaster from bare masonry, it usually causes less disruption and can often be completed in a day for a standard sized room.
Will skimming hide cracks and small imperfections?
A skim coat will smooth out minor surface imperfections and hairline marks, but larger cracks or unstable areas usually need repairing first so the new skim has a solid, reliable base to bond to.
Can I skim just one wall or does it have to be the whole room?
You can skim a single wall or ceiling without touching the rest of the room. We regularly carry out single-wall and single-ceiling skims where the rest of the surfaces are already in good condition.
