What is external rendering and what does it do?
Rendering is a protective layer, usually a sand and cement or lime based mix, applied to the outside walls of a property. It shields the brickwork or blockwork underneath from wind, rain and frost, while also giving the exterior a smart, finished appearance.

Is render just decorative, or does it protect the building?

What weather do you need to render a property?
Render needs dry, settled conditions to cure properly, ideally above 5 degrees and without heavy rain forecast for at least 24 to 48 hours after application. We plan render jobs around the forecast so the finish cures correctly and does not crack.
How long does render last before it needs redoing?
A well applied, well maintained render coat commonly lasts several decades. Lifespan depends on the render type, the aspect and exposure of the wall, and how well any hairline cracks are dealt with early rather than left to let water in.
