Can you lime plaster straight over existing gypsum?
No. Gypsum and lime don't bond reliably and gypsum blocks the breathability lime relies on. Any gypsum on a solid wall needs hacking off back to the masonry before we build up the lime coats properly.
Do I need listed building consent for lime work in Chesterfield?

Each coat needs roughly a week to firm up before the next goes on, and full carbonation (the lime turning back to a stable, hardened finish) continues for weeks to months afterwards. A typical room takes noticeably longer than a same-day gypsum skim, and we'll set out a realistic timeline upfront.
Is lime plastering more expensive than standard plastering?
Yes, generally, because of the multiple coats, longer drying time between coats, and the specialist skill involved. For a listed or period Chesterfield property it's rarely optional though, since gypsum on a solid wall tends to fail and need redoing anyway.
How long does lime plaster actually last?
